"Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counselors they are established"
(Proverbs 15:22)
The decision to use a planning consultant is not always easy. Some small businesses and nonprofits are hesitant to use foundation funding for a planning consultant.
Involving professional consultant will bring a number of skills and expertise that may be lacking in your organization. A consultant is free to observe organizational dynamics, a consultant tells the truth about your situation and what victory will require. The consultant is a messenger who is concerned not with popularity but with your success. It is natural that your staff lose objectivity because of emotional attachment to the organization. A consultant will remain objective an not have the same attachment that may make it difficult to evaluate and make an appropriate choices for each organization.
To help you view your organization from the perspective of a potential donor, counsel will diagnose problems and assess strengths and weaknesses. When staff are consumed with completing daily tasks, counsel can consider the overall strategy. Remaining focused on short and long term objectives is a challenge for every organization. Your consultant will assist in developing clear, coordinated plans for fundraising that identify tasks, timelines, and responsibility. When you pay a consultant you can expect that things will happen. Onsite meetings that are scheduled with a consultant have an urgency to them. Staff and volunteers are conscientious about completing assignments. The consultant keeps organization attention focused on actions that will accomplish goals. The consultant will ask the hard questions that persons in the organization may be hesitant to ask.
Here are a few questions that you should ask before you decide that you don't need a consultant!
* Are volunteers being used effectively?
* Do we have a plan for preserving our organization for the future?
* Do we have a clearly defined mission that is captured in a familiar statement?
* Do we have a strong, well trained board, able to communicate our mission and vision?
* Is there both a strategic plan and an annual operating plan?
* Is the fund raising budget sufficient to do the job?
* Do we have an effective web presence; our we communicating our mission and purpose for the 21st century?
* Is there a communicatons plan?
Consultants are 21st century advisors and counselors. They are just as important today for the spiritual growth and health of the church as they were in biblical times.
